Okeiko’s Estonia – The Path Less Travelled

Do you live in a beautiful place? Check out Estonia, a small country in the north of Europe with a turbulent history. Over 50% forests and 2000 miles of coastline reflect back that man can do no harm to nature. The beautiful old town is a reminder of what man can produce when he sets his mind to it, and while most tourists’ journeys begin and end here, we’d like to show you that this ‘aint necessarily so and by getting out into the countryside you can experience an untouched wilderness with plenty of room for people and nature to co-exist.

Welcome to photographer and artist, Okeiko’s Estonia, it can be yours if you take the time to smell the rukkilill.

The Road Not Taken

— Robert Frost, 1916

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Estonia

45,226 sq km
land: 43,211 sq km
water: 2,015 sq km
(includes 1,520 islands in the Baltic Sea)

The purl of a runlet that never ceases
In stir of kingdoms, in wars, in peaces;
With a hollow boiling voice it speaks
And has spoken since hills were turfless peaks.’

— Thomas Hardy, 1914

Strawberries that in gardens grow
Are plump and juicy fine,
But sweeter far as wise men know
Spring from the woodland vine.

— Robert Graves, 1914

The Cloud

— Percy Bysshe Shelley

I bring fresh showers for the thirsting flowers,
From the seas and the streams;
I bear light shade for the leaves when laid
In their noonday dreams.
From my wings are shaken the dews that waken
The sweet buds every one,
When rocked to rest on their mother’s breast,
As she dances about the sun.
I wield the flail of the lashing hail,
And whiten the green plains under,
And then again I dissolve it in rain,
And laugh as I pass in thunder.

Estonian People

In 2008, thirteen of Estonia’s fifteen counties were over 80% ethnic Estonian. The counties with the highest percentage Estonians are Hiiu County (98.4%) and Saare County (98.3%). However, in Harju County (which includes the national capital, Tallinn) and Ida-Viru County, ethnic Estonians make up only 59.6% (55.0% in Tallinn) and 19.7% of the population, respectively. In those two counties, Russians account for 32.4% (36.4% in Tallinn) and 71.2% of the population, respectively. In the nation as a whole, Russians make up 25.6% of the total population

If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite.
For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thru’ narrow chinks of his cavern.

— William Blake
